How to play Dots and Boxes

Open Dots and Boxes, check the instructions and begin a round. Claim the most boxes when all nine boxes are complete. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Read the objective before making your first input. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Claim the most boxes when all nine boxes are complete. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Select an unfilled edge between adjacent dots.
  2. Take turns while no box is completed.
  3. Completing one or two boxes in a move earns another turn.
  4. Once the board is full, compare the box totals.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

An edge shared by two nearly complete boxes can capture both boxes in one move. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Look for the relevant detail.

Watch out for this

Closing a box does not end your turn; you must draw again. A different version of the game may use a different rule. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
