How to play Backgammon

Backgammon gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Take a moment to compare.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
