How to play Futoshiki

Choose a round of Futoshiki and settle into its rules. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Use the example below to understand a decision. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
